Women’s Equality Day is celebrated annually on August 26 in the United States to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. The observance was first established in 1971 through a designation by Congress. It serves a dual purpose: celebrating the historic milestone of women’s suffrage and highlighting the ongoing civil rights movement for full gender equality. Organizations, community centers, and workplaces frequently mark the day by hosting educational events, discussions, and programs.
Women’s Equality Day is especially important in light of the rollback of certain women’s rights in the United States, including access to abortion. August 26 remains a very meaningful day for our American sisters and serves as a reminder that progress cannot be taken for granted – particularly when we are seeing the rise of far-right rhetoric in many parts of the world, including in Canada, and there are renewed challenges to women’s rights and gender equality broadly.
The official 2026 theme for Women’s Equality Day is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” This theme is set by the National Women’s History Alliance, and the theme honors women who are reimagining and rebuilding systems to ensure long-term environmental, economic, educational, and societal equity.
